It's another one of those gray mornings, chilly (but not bitter -- that comes later in the week), with a nasty north wind.

A perfect day to stay inside and make soup.

the sun came out and the temperature plummeted: it is now 11 degrees. And sunny.

There's something very wrong about that.

However, I have food and the makings of food, and books and movies, so I'm not planning on setting foot outside until the temperature gets somewhere close to freezing.

And that's that.

For some reason, I'm getting really enthusiastic about rice lately, which has never been the case before.  I chalk it up to the wonderful frozen Indian dinners I found at Trader Joe's, which all come with a side of basmati rice.  The portions are generous enough that each dinner is actually two meals, if I make up an extra bit of rice, and lo and ( Read more... )

There is a local chain in Chicago called Treasure Island, where I shopped for years.  It bills itself as "America's Most European Supermarket," and was a place where you could get almost anything on a regular basis -- Belgian chocolate, truffles, imported cheeses, a range of ethnic foods, good meat, excellent produce -- at reasonable prices.  (Well ( Read more... )
